Notes

Reclaim Syriac to Reaffirm Identity : A North American Story: The Syriac world is expanding in the USA. Now at Connecticut, USA.

This is the first time in America a Syro Malabar choir learned and sang the Newly composed Syriac chant, .M'Sabhinan (We Praise ). The chant originated at the St. Thomas Syro Malabar Parish, Bangaluru, under the leadership of its Vicar, Fr. Cyriac Madathil.
Fr. Madathil wanted to introduce a new Syriac chant for the occasion of the feast of St. Thomas on July 3, 2021. Nithin Chilambatuseeril and Rev. Dr. Thomas Kollamparambil, CMI, co-wrote the lyrics with two four-verses stanzas. Fr. Madathil insisted that I compose the melody. I obliged, and a team of seminarians at Dharmaram made an audio recording that we posted earlier in Aramaic Project-240 https://youtu.be/OGWArboEQoE.The lyricists composed a prayer of praise to Jesus the life-giver in union with St. Thomas, the father in faith of the first Christians in Kerala, India. The second verse, AM THOMA SLIHA AWUN (with Apostle Thomas, our father, is crucial. The prayer that Jesus taught His disciples started with the word AWUN. The song ends with the Apostle's exuberant acclamation, MAR WALAH (My Lord and my God), the most succinct profession of faith. This is the most endearing profession of faith to the St. Thomas Christians in India. We hope the phrase in its original Aramaic form will become a part of the mental map of the younger generation of Christians in India and elsewhere. A team of young seminarians at Dharmaram College in Bengaluru is heralding a new era in the Aramaic language and music history by creating new chant texts and music. We shall keep tracking new chants from the team and archiving their efforts for future historians of Aramaic Christianity in India.

We are grateful to Fr. Joseph Pullikkattil, the vicar of Syro Malabar Parish in Hartford, Connecticut and Biju Kodalipparambil for their initiatives, and the young choir members who enthusiastically learned and sang the song References
