Its better late than never . An historic injustice and deliberate sidelining with regard to Palackal Thoma Malpan stands corrected by none other than Rev. Dr. Benny Nalkkara CMI , the Provincial of Sacred Heart Province . In a remembrance speech marked by brevity and clarity of thoughts , Rev. Dr. Benny Nalkkara could draw a vivid picture of the personality and leadership of Palackal Thoma Malpan. Kudos to Pallippuram Parish and its enthusiastic Vicar Rev. Fr. Thomas Vaikathuparambil for this timely initiative.

I would say that, this unhealthy trend of denying the pioneering efforts and effective interventions of Palackal Thoma Malpan started in the seventies , ostensibly coinciding with the Canonisation process of St. Chavara. Some times we are taken aback by the pettiness of certain thought process. In the wild imagination of certain people , Palackal Malpan and Porukkara Malpan were to be denied any role whatsoever in the the founding of CMI. This gained momentum despite St Chavara having documented the founding of CMI and the stellar role played by Palackal Malpan. In fact, Palackal Malpan nurturing and mentoring St. Chavara into a monk of exemplary virtues should have added on to the many attributes of St. Chavara and not the other way round.

Now that we have overcome this , its time for the CMI and Pallippuram Parish to go beyond annual Remembrance Services. An authentic biography of Palackal Malpan, research into his times & tribulations, Endowment Lectures and the likes are few of the measures that could set the whole process into a proactive mode . Above all, the spiritual nourishment and prayers answered through the intercession of Palackal Malpan would generate the necessary demand and impetus for Canonisation. Its our hope that Pallippuram Parish would provide another saint for the Universal Catholic Church, a moment to be cherished for Syro Malabar Church in particular .

As for the audience and keen followers of Aramaic Project , its a continuum with Palackal Yawsep Kathnar lighting the lamp of Aramaic/ Syriac revival , a befitting gesture from a worthy descendant of Palackal Thoma Malpan

Dr.Thomas Kalayil's description, if taken seriously, is a subject for a thesis. It shows that something as simple as a logo/motto has layers and layers of meanings and context - scriptural, historical, theological and linguistics. Dr.Kalayil explains how a given language can shape and drive theological points across the medium. It is fascinating to see how a biblical verse morphs and progresses in thought, faith and interpretation across different languages - Hebrew, Syriac, Latin and English. Kudos to the CMSI team for recording and sharing such a valuable conversation!

I am Renjith Leen, a Kerala-based journalist and currently I'm the deputy editor of Shalom World News of the Shalom Media Group. I wish to offer my sincere appreciation for the noble work you are doing in preserving and propagating the ancient liturgical music heritage of the Syrian Catholics of Kerala. Although a Latin myself, I'm a big lover of the Tridentine Mass and Gregorian music. The love for that rich tradition brought me to your YouTube videos on the Syriac heritage.
Ever since I assumed charge of the news team of Shalom, I have ample time at my disposal. I got a pair of speakers installed in my office and i watch each documentary of the Christian Musicological Society. Earlier, while I was working for The New Indian Express, I had an ambitious project which failed to materialise. It was a Sunday magazine feature on the revival of Syriac music in the Syro Malabar Church. In fact I was inspired by your videos and the kids of Palluruthy and the young choristers of Palai diocese. Your interview with Fr Cyriac who sings the Mass in Syriac left my misty eyed so much so I immediately traced him on social media and called him straightaway.
Fr, when are you visiting Kerala next? I very much look forward to meeting you in person during your next trip.

It was a pleasure listening to you, although I wish you were given more time. I am also glad to share that I have been offered a fully funded PhD Fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the department of ethnomusicology, where I will be working on my project that looks at the various musical traditions among the St. Thomas Christians.

Dear Fr. Joseph J. Palackal,
I am a malayalee pentecostal who has recently discovered the rich syrian heritage of my ancestors. Since im born and raised in America I would look down upon my culture into which i was born. However after discovering the Catholic Church and Indian Christian History, i cannot stop researching my heritage. I am even trying to learn Malayalam and hopefully Syriac in the future. I wanted to ask some questions about the syro malabar rite. Is this rite the same or similar to what was used by the St Thomas Nazrani Christians in the first century, since St Thomas came from that same east syrian region?

Also I wanted to know more about the syriac music style. I want to say that I have zero qualification in the area of liturgy. And since I am protestant i probably don't have any right to ask, but i really want to know. For the apostolic Christian churches the three sacred languages of Latin, Greek, and Syriac were the predominant languages of the liturgy. However the latinization from the Roman catholics to the eastern catholics, along with the liturgical reforms in the 1960s, the liturgy seems stripped of its traditional roots. This is most evident in the sacred music. Catholics all over the world are trying to bring back their latin, greek, and syriac traditions back into the liturgy. I hope my opinion is not offensive, but i feel the modernization of all the catholic rites is harmful to preserving the living faith. In traditional Latin mass pre 1962, which is still used by millions today, they chant their hymns like so...

Although all of these chants come from different parts of the world and import their own cultural styles there is something universal about them all. There is a sense of the sacred that I, who cannot understand any of these languages, I can still recognize the sacredness of that music. However when looking at a syro malabar or syro malankara chant I hear something different.

The instruments are overpowering the vocals, and the music style is very modern and feels like it should be used in cinema. In fact many malayalee pentecostal singers in my church use this style. The other apostolic chants, had much more emphasis on vocals and the instruments are barely used. Their styles were passed down from generations.. I am by no means a music expert but I'm saddened to see that the Indian churches using protestant and modern styles. This is when i came across your youtube channel to see that you are bringing back the syriac languages and styles. I want to thank you for all the effort you put into keeping tradition alive. Although it is starting out as a few hymns at mass, i believe one day syriac will be the language of the syro malabar again. Also i wanted to ask if you have done chants that focus more on vocals like the ones above. So far the only one i could find that describes what i am looking for is this video of indian orthodox chanting in malayalam.

I believe that bringing back pure voice chant like the other churches will bring back the sacredness that has been lost. But this is only my opinion. I was planning on creating an hour long type audio format podcast series. Beginning with the advent of Christianity in India, establishing it's historicity and that Christianity is not a foreign or a colonial religion that came to India off late, clearing the general misconceptions. The general idea is to connect today's people with the Apostolic roots of our faith, which is very slowly being forgotten in our times. We could go on to talk about the east Syriac tradition, chants, liturgy and other customs and traditions associated with it. Talking in great detail about these topics. I am hoping to know your thoughts on this as well and am open to your suggestions and criticisms.

I was hoping that we could do it within the next 2 weeks. Please update me with your schedule and we can work the dates out.

I was also hoping to have a few conversations prior, just to get to know eachother well and discuss the topics and fine tune the ideas

Thank you for your prompt response. Glad I could get in touch with you. I had asked our scientist Achan (I like that, but these days he is more into sheep rearing and trying to make goat cheese for Bangaloreans) to get me your email when I found that you are a CMI father. By the way, I studied in St Vincent, Pala. Are your efforts worthwhile?!! I think it is an incredibly worthwhile effort. So please tell each member of the team including that young boy who interviewed that Chaldean father, that what they are doing has and will have long term impact. Where in the world could I have gone and learned all about or heard these hymns but for your effort.

Am so glad that you are doing it in US. Am hopeful someday a body of works will emanate out of this collection and about our history and tradition. In fact I landed at your YouTube pages looking at the whole issue from a historical perspective. We will discuss that later.

I have added your number and will shortly send a WhatsApp message. Am a bit busy next couple of days. And am relatively free next week. So we can talk over phone sometime.

By the way, you keep asking in some of your interviews if the celebrant used to say the institution part in Suriyani. I had heard it while in School in the 70s. There was a priest, a gentle old soul whose name I do not know, who used to shift to Suriyani on all masses which he used to celebrate.

One of my fondest memories of going to church, is my mother taking me to Cherpunkal church on first Fridays at 5.30 AM in the morning when an old priest with a beard as white as Santa used to celebrate the whole mass in Suriyani.

We have to preserve these traditions for our future generations. May the good Lord shower his abundant blessings on all who are involved in this wonderful work.

Amidst the gloom of COVID Pandemic , this initiative is a source of immense joy and overwhelming hope. Revival of Syriac and reclaiming our legacy has been a task with too many imponderables . However the tide has turned in our favour and we have at least three online programmes for learning Syriac . Amongst these the one from Malankara Nasrani Yogam is run by learned laity - a sign of changing times . Nallathanny Research Centre is all set to start their online Syriac Diploma course affiliated to Paurastya Vidyapeedam. The crown in this quest for Syriac literacy is the ' House of Wisdom of East Syriac ' established by the Eparchy of Pala.

Kudos to Muthuplackal Rev Sebastian Kathanar ( Nallathanny Research Centre ) Sr Mary Augustine ( Nasrani Padana Parambara ) and Ms. Anitta Jose ( SMYM , Kattappana Forane ) for their efforts and thanks to Palackal Rev Yawsep Kathanar for launching our Children on to an International Stage . The intervention and the new perspectives offered by Palackal Rev Yawsep Kathanar has enriched this video in a special way and let's hope that this video will be put to use as a source of inspiration in our Sunday Schools

Dear All,

I am so glad to inform you that our recent song project, “Qandisa Alaha” sung by our children was well appreciated and has reached into the hearts of so many music loving people all over the world. On the very first day of its publication, our Bishop Jacob Angadiath commented thus, “Congratulations!!! Beautiful singing of Qandisa Alaha by our children. My special greetings to all the children. Keep up the spirit.” Several priests and lay people from our Diocese called me and expressed their words of appreciation. We thank them all.

Another important event happened recently. Fr. Joseph Palackal CMI, who is presently working in the Arch Diocese of New York and who is a scholar in music, the founder of Christian Musicological Society of India, dedicated for the promotion and regeneration of Syriac liturgical music, contacted me a few weeks ago. Fr. Joseph Palackal CMI is already well known for giving beautiful music to all the songs in the Syro Malabar Holy Qurbana in English.

He happened to hear about our Syriac Song Project through his brother in Adelaide, Australia who in turn got the song forwarded from his other brother in Ernakulam. What a small world! Fr. Joseph liked the singing so much and asked me whether we would give permission to add this singing in his Syriac Music Archives. If you go through his Website www.aramaicproject.com, you can know all about his attempts to rejuvenate the Syriac Liturgical Songs in India, in the USA and elsewhere.

The trend is catching on and its a welcome sign . However we cannot rest on our laurels, because other Eparchies have to join this movement . Once the movement gathers strength , definitely both crowning ceremony and 'Bar Mariyam ' would become optionals in the officially approved Text . Of course the biggest advantage is that AP has got a wide reach among the young and especially the Diaspora .

Hi Palackal Acha,

I noticed in this video that you spoke very passionately about this topic.(link to Aramaic project 168)

I'm also learning more about this tradition of the pesaha appam murikkal. I don't think most families even know that this is tradition that can be done at home since it is so often done within the churches.

I'm finding that there are different versions of the prayers. I have found two so far and have attached them here in this email. Could you comment on which prayer is which? Does it matter which prayer is used at home?

Thank you so much for taking time from your busy schedule to write those encouraging words. I truly appreciate that. Those words are the true rewards for our efforts..
It is fascinating to see how you differentiate Syriac language from its application in Syriac liturgy. No one has responded in that manner albeit many of my comments in that regard. The language itself is worth preserving and promoting irrespective of its use in liturgy. The sound of a language is as special as the sound of a species of bird. THank you for highlighting this aspect. If you are willing I would like to have an onthe camera conversation with you on this matter and publish it on our channel. My next visit to India is in July.

Father Joseph Palackal is doing a wonderful job. Request that west syriac traditions ( syro-malankara) also be brought out and chants and history recorded. We do not find many syro-malabar ( east syriac) churches in south Travancore but are concentrated in the northern regions of Travancore and Kochi ! Is it because, the 9th century migrants to Kollam belonged to the west syriac or Antioch tradition as they came from the regions around the present day Mosul of Iraq ( or Ninevah mentioned in Bible ) in 823 AD where as the 4th century migrants to Kodungallore belonged to the east syriac tradition?

Thayyil Cyril Kathanar is indeed a beacon of hope for all of us who cherish our Syriac tradition and earnestly wish for a revival . From the interview , its clear that the lamp lit by Rev Palackal Ousep Kathanar is going to enlighten many , through the likes of Thayyil Kathanar and Mattathil Kathanar . What differentiates Thayyil Kathanar is his ardent passion for the language and East Syriac Liturgy . At the same time he is willing to experiment , to make it more appealing for the youth . Solemn Qurbana should be sung in the traditional manner , but new tunes should be encouraged to extend the reach . I'm glad that efforts are on in Chicago and also in Pala to that effect .

The next logical step would be to bring out an album of traditional Suriyani songs to the accompaniment of modern instruments . From our side the laity should petition our Holy Synod to start teaching Syriac in our Major Seminaries . If Greek , Hebrew and Latin can be taught , how can Syriac be left behind ? It's a matter of shame that most of the Syro Malabar Priests do not even have a working knowledge of Syriac . On the contrary Syro Malankara Church is steadfast in its allegiance to West Syriac language and traditions . Lets hope that Bilingual Qurbana would gain much acceptance among the faithful .
May the Almighty bless Palackal Kathanar and Thayyil Kathanar to continue with their efforts.

Let me place on record my deepest appreciation for the sincere efforts and perseverance of Rev Palackal Ousep Kathanar in making this possible When a section of the SMC in Kerala is still unable to come to terms with the history , identity and unique Patrimony of the Church , St Thomas Diocese of Chicago stands tall as a beacon of hope . Lets pray that these videos would be watched by many and they would in turn get inspired to demand bilingual Qurbana in their Parishes Even as we edify ourselves in reclaiming our liturgical heritage , its a time for introspection as well. His Beatitude is unable to celebrate a Bilingual Qurbana in Ekm Angamaly Archdiocese for obvious reasons . For that matter even the Qurbana as decreed by the Holy Synod is an anathema for a section of the clergy and they indulge in wanton additions and deletions . However lets dream and hope for a day when the SMC - would stand united as a church of the East Syriac tradition enriching this great Catholic Communion

Firstly I would like to congratulate you for the great work you are doing through the Aramaic Project. It is really inspiring and courageous. I pray the Holy Spirit guide and help you in your endeavours. I have attended a Mass celebrated by you in Canberra years before I remember buying the Margam CD and some posters. However, I recently came to see your youtube channel which is a great source of exciting information Truly we study history of people around the world, but know little about our own history. Though we Syro Malabar Christians claim that we have a faith that hails from St. Thomas the apostle, It is really eye opening that historical evidences that connects us to the Apostle are fading away unnoticed. It is really sad that our generation has no clue about any clue of the rich heritage we had.I still remember my late father used say that in his childhood days the mass was in Suriyani and later it was changed to Malayalam. But he didn't had any further idea regarding it. Not to blame anyone, we Indians are generally poor in documenting and transferring our history.Now regarding the CD, I can buy the original CD and booklet. I am happy to bear the postal charges too. Please let me know how to make payment. Do I just click through the donate button? But acha I would like to have the electronic version of tracks too if its possible for you.

Secondly, I would like to tell you that I am interested to learn Syriac language also. I came to know through your videos the initiative of priests like Koonammakkal Thoma Kathanar to teach Syriac to the common people. However, being living here in Australia, what are our options here. Subject - Aramaic Project-109. Dr. Joseph J. Palackal's lecture at The American Library of Congress

To revive a dying tradition , it is important to create a wider audience and that too among the intelligentsia. Dr Joseph Palackal's lecture is a conscious effort in this direction. The Portuguese Missionaries ( Franciscans were an exception ) , and the historians that followed painted Mar Thoma Christians as Nestorians and Schismatics.' Sagdinan Mar and Bar Mariyam' are the living traditions which attests to the orthodoxy of Mar Thoma Christians. Languages become extinct when they are no more spoken /used by the concerned. Despite a low level of Syriac literacy the language survived thus far because it was the liturgical language and the faithful made the connection to 'Isho Mishiha'. For Syriac to regain its lost glory , liturgy has to become bilingual with introduction of syriac chants wherever possible. Simultaneously there has to be a campaign to spread this awareness about the rich Syrian tradition and heritage Let us give up this dichotomy - Being a proud Syro Malabarian and at the same time denying the Syriac Patrimony !

I feel extremely proud of you because, you stand along the traditions of the Mar Thomas Christians.

Traditions whether it is of an ecclesia or a society are to be safeguarded. Mar Thomas Christians are in need of this quality, because traditions are our asset and it is our Syrian Tradition. Mar Thomas Christians use two Syrian traditions, East and West.

The eastern tradition is followed by the Chaldean states of the Persian kingdom, which is followed by the Syro-Malabarites of India. The west tradition was followed by ancient Orthodox Church of Roman Empire, which is adopted by the Syro Malankara church in the relationship between Malankara Orthodox church and the Antiochean church.

Bro.Joseph in his Aramaic project highly says about Syro Malankara Catholic church. As a member of the Syro Malankara church I feel proud of it. The greatest treasure of the Syro Malankara church is her ancient liturgy and culture. Therefore the great emphasis on the use of Syriac language the celebrating Holy Qurbono and Daily Prayers as per traditions, the addressing of holy things of church in Syriac. By all these the Syro Malankara church can strive to hold the Antiochean tradition and Syriac.
When the Malankara church reunited with the Catholic Church, Servant of God Archbishop Mar Ivanios had demanded for ‘an unchanged liturgy ‘which was accepted by the apostolic see.

With heartfelt gratitude, I remember Fr.Palackal and Bro. Joseph who are accomplishing this Aramaic project. Let the Almighty God bless us for safeguarding our traditions.

Thank you for your response. We do miss dear Choomar Choondal, and would love to see his 1989 letter. We saw him last in 1994, after working with him again in 1991.

I do hope his daughter "Binty" (?) is doing well now. I'm at AIFF right now on the jury and can't open your website, but hope to learn more about your project.

Must rush to the screenings. Perhaps you can make use of the Kerala materials we have archived at ARCE.

This includes Syrian Christian recordings made by Bake in 1938, and our own either from 1984, 1991 or 1994.Bishop Mar Aprem was most helpful.

A belated note to say thank you for your most interesting talk and video recording which you presented to CWC at SOAS last Monday evening. The ARAM conference has kept me busy hence the tardy replyt. Your efforts to maintain the Aramaic (Syriac) chant are making an important contribution in ensuring that this vital component of Indian Christianity will continue; after all it has had almost a 2000 year trajectory. In this way, the Aramaic chant is 'living heritage'. Speaking on behalf of the members of CWC, I am sure that they found it fascinating and giving them an insight into this rich dimension of Indian culture, as well as Indian Christianity. My one regret is that, despite my efforts, Music did not respond. Always happy to host another performance when you are next in London and hopefully there will be synergy with Music.

Subject - About Joseph Palackal's efforts to revive Syriac Mass

Hi all, let me introduce myself, I am a dentist from Kottayam Dr Savant Sebastian, MDS; endodontist.. I am the young man Binu Chettan so kindly mentions in this video, who wanted Cyriac mass for his wedding.. I have hardly any knowledge in the language itself.. It’s the music and the feeling it evoked that got me fascinated years back when I first attended holy kurbana in Syriac language at Athirampuzha church.. The powerful, yet tender voice of the priest (Fr Joseph Pathil) and the passion with which he celebrated the mass was so moving that it stirred such deep emotions in me.. I was keen not to miss a single Syriac mass at Athirampuzha, ever since.. I believe that’s what every celebration of holy Eucharist should be like; the priest and the community as a whole trying to be one with Him..! Sad to say, despite the feeble attempts by the archdiocese of Changanacherry, the celebration of holy communion in Syro Malabar rite has dwindled away to mere music concerts; priests and the choir both trying to impress the community with ear deafening beats and voice modulations.. We attend countless holy Eucharists with the air of grim reality show judges with our arms folded across our chests..! At the end we leave, busily discussing among us: this priest was good; the communion song was a classic; the sermon was delivered well; the male voice was not that great, and so on..! If only the few hours we spend weekly in a church wouldn’t end up as such meaningless facades..! When will our kurbanas become something with deeper meanings, that touches our insides in a way only He can? I have always envied jacobites and those of Syro Malabar rite.. The whole community is the choir there.. the priest does not recite prayers, he sings his heart out, to lift the hearts of the community and together they become one in god..! That is what fr Saji mattathil, fr Joseph Pathil, fr Jose palackal, Binu chettan, Deepa Chechi and all these Syriac lovers are trying to say.. the music composition is amazing, powerful enough to move our stone hearts.. Slowly our eyes begin to well up, and our hearts fill with a myriad of emotions, a spectrum ranging from deep sorrow to pure joy...! The prayers and hymns are in perfect harmony, in a continuum, that our attention does not waver even for a second.. It’s like the whole world comes to a standstill..! An amazing journey in a short time that keeps reverberating in our hearts..! It changes us from within and that’s what I think the whole point is..! As the soft spoken friar, Fr bobby Jose says, ഇത് ആരുടെ മിഴികളെയാണ് ഈറനണിയിക്കാത്തത്..!

Hope you are fine. I watched Achan's interview with BinuDeepa , with great joy and happiness. It is really wonderful! Super! Highly informative and vibrant . Worth witnessing and deeply convincing. Inspiring and thought provoking. Simple and attractive. I believe that it is just "God's Plan and His Intervention".

Acha it is very interesting to say that your special talent, or I would rather say "a gift of observation" and a very natural way of asking an apt questions to the right person, as you did in all the previous interviews, played a very important role here also.

Yes, altogether it is really fascinating and fantastic! May Good God make your efforts fruitful, fulfilling your dreams and visions, in and through the future generations. I talked with Sajiachan yesterday. He is also very happy about it. I'm planning to visit him during Christmas holidays. (I would like to say a humble suggestion acha. If possible, it would be better if you could add the KNDISHA CD cover also to it, anywhere in the interview-the one I gave you when we met in Germany.

It contains all the Hymns of Syiac Rasa Qurban fully and completely. The Malayalam transcript also is inserted. I think, it can be added, for example, as an additional contextual information, when they speak of the Sunday school competitions. And the CD is available in Sandesa Nilayam office, Changanacherry.) I am fine here.

Besides the regular classes in the university I learn piano and a Stimmbildungkurs' (voice training course) which helps a singer to produce voice scientifically, and sing using the staff notation. And also I am trying to notate the Hymns and Chants of the Syriac Qurbana with the help of a great musician here.

I first want to apologize for my delayed response. I was surprised but very glad that my note was able to have that impact on you and your team! I would have never imagined. Your very personal reply to my message was a pleasant surprise for me too. Thank you for sending it. I could have elaborated a bit more on my note if not for the character limit but my note captures my general feelings. I have always been interested in learning more about Kerala and church history, but I stumbled upon your website and youtube videos after staying one summer in Kerala a couple years ago. I also took a class in college later that year about music in India and got a chance to read a couple of your articles.

I do not mind if you post my note onto the homepage. I have attached a photo to the email.

Also, I was wondering if I could share your email address with a very close friend of mine who is also familiar with your work, and I am sure he would love to connect with you. He is currently studying Syriac at SEERI in their masters degree program. He also recently took up voice lessons with a Jacobite priest there. He was telling me a couple weeks ago that he has started to learn to sing the Nicene Creed in Syriac. He has several interests related to Syriac, but some that he has mentioned to me include helping make the Syriac language and grammar more approachable and compiling Syriac music texts with their transliterations, and ultimately making it easier to re-incorporate Syriac into liturgical and daily practice. I know that his interests have significant overlap with your Aramaic Project which is why I think it would be great if he was able to connect with you. Please let me know if that is okay.

Dear Fr. Joseph,

Thank you for your quick response and the Paypal details -- I will email back later again when we finalize plans and set it up.

I discovered the Syrian Christian roots and heritage of my own church (the Marthoma Church) after my college days. I was attracted by the beauty of our heritage and how the liturgies (both East Syriac and West Syriac) adorn and proclaim the Gospel of our Lord Jesus so clearly. It was also fascinating to learn that the Kerala Nasrani (Syrian) churches span all denominational families (Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and Assyrian).

I am very interested in doing my small part to contribute to preserving this heritage, esp. with the Kerala churches being somewhat of a bastion for it, given the intense persecution experienced by our brethren in Syria, Iraq and Iran. One of my core passions is to see faithful translations of the liturgies into English --- in a way that does not lose the original melodies of the chants. I know that the Marthoma church has come a long way in this project, but there is much work yet to be done.

I learnt about your work first through the Youtube video of your beautiful, almost angelic, rendition of "Qaddisa Alaha" at the National Shrine in Washington DC.

It is curious that the Syro Malabar hierarchy has yet to officially support your work or recognize its importance. I pray that the doors will open in that direction as well.

Have you ever sought to collaborate with SEERI? It would seem like an ideal place to house your project.

I am a Knanaya Catholic living in Houston, Texas. I just wanted to say thank you very much for your Aramaic project and all that you do to preserve and protect our Syro Malabar musical heritage. I am a History Education major (I will be a teacher in one years time) and I absolutely love both history and the humanities. With this in mind, I fell in love with the musical heritage of the Syro Malabar Church and our Syriac Roots. At first I was only researching the history of our Church and the Knanaya Community but later the Syriac roots of the Church and our liturgical music truly astounded me. I have watched many of your videos on Youtube and they have really given me so much knowledge that I did not have before. Perhaps one of my favorite hymns is the Knanaya Wedding Chant Bar Mariam and I was wondering if you could send me a Syriac to English side by side translation. Also I was wondering if you could share some knowledge with me on the old Knanaya Purathana songs, I have always wondered the deep meaning and origins of these old wedding songs that we sing. Once again Palackal Acha, you are truly a gift to the Syro Malabar Church and I really hope you continue your mission.

It is wonderful to watch these young children singing syriac chants.Very glad to know that their master, Mr Baby Anamthuruthil is handing over what he experienced in his childhood to the young generation. I hope these children also keep this tradition alive and active. These children are really the hope of our community. I think the Lord is working through Mr Baby and these children to make changes in the way of our worship by using the sacred language of or Lord. The Holy Spirit is now really working and influencing the church through these ordinary children (Lucky children) and their master. God bless them.

Dear Fr. Palachal,

I have seen the video "Aramaic Project-Part 26. Children's Choir at Suriyanippally, Palluruthy, sings "B'eda d'yawmaan".

"B'eda d'yawmaan" had been singing in Thuruthy St. Mary's church belongs to Changanacherry as some of the elders are aware of it. I am not sure who all are alive now.
You can read the story here: http://mtnazrani.blogspot.in/2012/04/blog-post_5188.html. But unfortuately I couldn't hear that in my childhood as by that time they had switched to Malayalam song in the same tune...but not a translation of the orginal. It is being sung still there during the feasts.

Fr. Immanuel Thelly has translated this to Malayalam and you can read this here:
In Major feast, they used to take the statue of Michael outside the chappel at that time they used to sung some Syriac songs. According to my knowledge that was some parts of Rosary in Syriac.

'ആകാശങ്ങലിളിരിക്കുന്ന'തും 'നന്മനിറഞ്ഞ മറിയ'വും അറിയാം! ആളുകളുടെ കണ്ണ് തള്ളിക്കാൻ ഇപ്പോൾ അത് മതി!!
