Introduction

This ōnīţa from the morning prayer on Monday describes the scene at the second coming of Christ. The text is an example of hepta-syllabic verses in Syriac poetry, popularized by St. Ephrem: b’en-dān-sap-rā-d’meţ-paţ-hīn. In this chant, each strophe consists of six lines with seven syllables each.

All the songs of the SAPRA are listed below along with the weekday dedicated to each song.

O Lord, in the morning thou shalt hear my voice.

In the morning when the doors of heaven
Are opened to hear our prayer
Receive, O Lord, our supplication,
And answer our petitions in thy mercy,
And bestow hope and redemption
To people who are waiting for thee.

And in the morning I will prepare myself and appear before thee.

The dawn of the Lord has come near
And the redeemer will shine forth,
And give reward to the just.
Blessed is the one who has worked
Diligently in the vineyard of Christ,
He will receive full wages.

Praise to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Praise to thee in the morning hour
From those in heaven and on earth,
To the Son who sits at the right side [of the Father].
At the voice of the trumpet, old men,
The youth, and children will wake up
Because thou created them for thy glory.

From eon unto eon, amen, amen.

O our Father, blessed is the one
Who has conducted himself like thee,
And gathered heavenly riches,
And filled the ship with all good things,
And has directly come to the port,
To the meeting place of all the just.

Let all people say amen, amen.

O Lord, let thy reign come,
May thy will be done on the earth
As it is in heaven.
Give us the bread we need,
And do not allow us to enter into temptation,
But deliver us from the wicked one.
