Holy, Holy, Holy

Language English
Composer of melody Joseph J. Palackal and George Thaila
Music Arrangements David Claman and Dennis K. Poulose
Sung by: Joseph J. Palackal, & Chorus

Introduction:

The text of this hymn is slightly longer than the one used in the Latin liturgy. It has two sections. The first section consists of the “thrice holy from Is 6:3 and Rev. 4: 8. The second part consists of text from verses 25 (“Hosanna”) & 26 ("Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”) from Psalm 118; these are the verses that the crowd sang to welcome Jesus into temple on Palm Sunday (Mt 21: 9; Mk 11:9-10). Added to this is the reference to the second coming of Jesus, “who came, and is to come in the name of the Lord.” Thus, the hymn alludes to different texts and contexts as well as multiple voices of the worshipping community, "the children crying out in the temple area” in praise of Jesus (Mt 21: 15-16), and the heavenly choir echoing the song of the earthly choir.

Lyrics of the song

Holy, holy, holy, Lord, the mighty God.
Heaven and earth are filled with Your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Hosanna to the Son of David.

Blessed is he who came,
And is to come in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
